WHAT I TESTED
I had 40 cold emails to send for a freelance project. Same target audience, same offer, same call to action. I wrote 20 with Claude and 20 with ChatGPT, using identical prompts. Then I sent them and waited.
WHAT HAPPENED
ChatGPT's emails got a 7.5% reply rate. Claude's got 17.5%. That's not a typo — more than 2x the response rate from the same prompt.
When I read them back, the difference was obvious. ChatGPT defaulted to a "professional" tone that made every email sound like it was written by the same eager intern. Claude varied its phrasing more and used shorter sentences. Less polish, more personality.
THE TAKEAWAY
The "smarter" AI isn't always the better one. For copy that needs to feel human, default-mode ChatGPT is currently optimizing for the wrong thing. Claude wins on cold outreach by a margin big enough to actually matter.
YOUR PROMPT TO TRY
You are writing one cold email to [target persona].
The goal is a single reply, not a sale.
Constraints:
- Under 90 words.
- No "I hope this finds you well."
- One specific observation about their work.
- One question that's easy to answer in two sentences.
- End with a real first name only.
Now write three versions, each with a different opening line.Run this in Claude and ChatGPT both. Compare. You'll see the difference.
See you next week.
